May Day Update

It’s May 2023. We started our build process in January - meaning shovel to dirt. The dream began decades ago, but you already know that.

We found our backsplash tile for our kitchen in this antique market in Palermo. After haggling for every piece he had, we brought home 19 tiles. I would have purchased more lights, but at this time, we weren’t sure how we’d get them home. We did buy two lights plus two sets of tile; after purchasing two street quality suitcases, we wrapped the items with care and they did make it all the way home. These will be the showcase in our kitchen, behind the pot filler. Blues, greens and cream will be the colors.

Here’s where we are.

July is our target date. If it goes further, August is our drop-dead date. If it takes longer, we’re homeless. Literally. And so are the cats.

Things go fast. Then things stop. Doors are right; then they are not. There’s a builder’s allowance and then there’s what you want. And of course, the copper metal roof is more. The appliances are more. The HVAC is over budget, and the check is due now. HOA is literally crazy and knowing that, we decided to buy the next three lots anyway. “You can’t win,” explains our attorney. “Tell them what they want. Be nice, then walk out the door and throw up.” We’ll throw up with another acre in our pockets.

As of today, we are not dried in. Some windows remain; the doors need to be installed. The roof and the siding are here, but they are not here. If you’ve built a home, you know what I mean. Saving Time Designs is rocking-n-rolling with my credit card, and the caliber of tile that will be in my house will rock your world. Not that it’s expensive, but it’s European and hand painted. Everything has a story. I’ll remember that every time I make a payment. The stress she has lifted off my shoulders is cosmic.
