A Slice of Buttermilk Pie

I've known about The Yesterday Cafe as long as it has existed. From it's beginning in Rutledge to its move and eight-year reign in Greensboro, it's food draws people like moths to a flame. No one disputes the great Southern treats, but when you combine the dining atmosphere with the quaint streetscape, shopping opportunities and historical spots located just outside its front door, it's magic - or at least, a wonderful afternoon.

Greensboro is lined with mom-and-pop shops accented with the likes of a newspaper office reminiscent of my early days in the paper biz - splattered sayings of living right [the best way to get on your feet is to get off your ass]  on the wall within eye's view of the typewriter [what's that?].  There's antique stores with do-dads and gadgets that weigh heavily in the 'want' column as opposed to the 'need' column. They're just so darn cute. and then there's Festival Hall, alive with area storytellers, actors and even American idol folks, around the corner, if you have a hankering for tea about mid-afternoon, there's a lovely English tea room with the most amazing currant scones. There's always a 'how do you do' and a nod as you walk down the street, a smile for the stranger, and a history lesson proclaimed by the local artist who sits before her easel on the sidewalk. Of course, there's the Ritz Carlton down the street and Lake Oconee just around the bend. there's something for everyone in this little heartland town.

I walked the Greensboro streets with a new friend a few months ago. He was British, and it was a daunting task convincing him of the wonder of buttermilk pie.  And when you throw in the bit about it being simply soured milk, his face curled. He was hesitant, but once it was in his hand, the sweet crusty goodness disappeared almost as quickly as his expression.

That's the way those Greensboro folks are - they give you their best, and you can't help but devour it.
