Five Star Luxury at The Merrion in Dublin, Ireland

Named as a Conde Nast Traveler 2020 Readers' Choice Award as one of the Top 10 hotels in Ireland, and in 2023, it continues to rank highly as one of the best hotels on the Emerald Isle. The Merrion is the quintessential respite for luxury and self-care. Located in the perfect downtown, city centre location, the best of Dublin is a mere five minute walk from the front door: The National Gallery, The National Museum of Ireland, St. Stephen's Green, Grafton Street.

Situated on Upper Merrion Street, the hotel is in the heart of Georgian Dublin where historical and contemporary townhouses line the streets. The main house of the hotel, consisting of four restored Georgian townhouses, is accented by the contemporary Garden Wing and its two private period gardens. Irish fabrics, antiques and architecture accentuate the original interiors. To complete the experience, two restaurants, two bars, a spa, swimming pool. Everything a travel would need.
“The Merrion is one of the most significant restoration projects which has taken place in Dublin over recent years," states Peter MacCann, general manager, "The Georgian architecture lends itself perfectly to the needs of a hotel: the elegantly simple and dignified exterior of the houses give presence and a wonderful sense of arrival, to The Merrion. Mornington House has transitional interiors of great magnificence which provide an exciting backdrop for the activities of the hotel and its guests. These four important Listed houses have been sympathetically restored and brought back to life to be enjoyed by people from all over the world.”
Its beautiful gardens, designed by Irish landscape artist Jim Reynolds, recreate the feel of the 18th century with manicured hedges, water lilies, statuary and obelisks.  In the summer, it's a setting for dinner. In the winter, it's a breath of fresh air. And surveying it all, Oscar Wilde, Irish poet and playwright. Visit the Oscar Wilde Memorial in Merrion Square.
As the home to one of the country's most impressive private art collection of the 19th and 20th centuries, the interior walls showcase both classical and contemporary Irish and European art.  To accentuate visions of art, let The Merrion's Art Afternoon Tea delight one's taste. Be inspired as you discover artists and gallery offerings.

*Traveler's Note: We chose to visit The Merrion after an exhausting fall schedule of travel, writing and photography. We visited during the Christmas season of 2019. From research of the hotel, we realized this spot would revitalize and rejuvenate tired souls. Quite impressive was the communication before we arrived. Parking was scheduled; itineraries booked. Any question regarding anything - attractions, recommendations, dining - was attended to, leaving us with no worries upon arrival. Their attention to detail exceeded our expectations exponentially.
And might I add, our evenings in the Main House left us questioning whether to roam the town or relax in our room.  Robes. Slippers. Champagne. Room service. Turn down service. WILDE water. Even cable covers. Amazing and intoxicating - an understatement.
As travel writers who choose a once-in-a-lifetime stay at resorts, hotels or venues once a year, we choose with great care. Since we fund all our travel, we want the expense to be worth our experience. The Merrion provided an experience that we gladly share with travelers in hopes they, too, will share in this incredible opportunity during a visit to Dublin, Ireland.
