My First Overnight in an RV Trailer and I’m Hooked

The Range Vintage Trailer Resort

I was an trailer virgin. Never have I ever - as the game begins - spent a night in a trailer, Airstream or otherwise. Not knowing what to expect, I firmly believe I hit the mother-lode for my first experience sleeping in a trailer. Honestly, if my eyes remained shut, I would have thought I was in a hotel bed, pulling the cozy covers up to my head and snuggling in for a wonderful night’s rest. I can confirm that a good experience in the ‘wild’ can be had, but whether to do this as a lifestyle—day after day— remains open for debate.

Their tag line — laid back luxury—proved true. At The Range, our 2013 Airstream rental placed us in the middle of those wide open spaces of Texas, complete with a fire pit outside our front door, a hammock swinging between trees, a grill, lounge chairs and outdoor dining table, and even twinkle lights guiding our steps. Totally in awe that such an enchanting place existed in the middle of nowhere, the resort sits on 30-acres of open land with each site offering privacy (at least 100 feet from the other site) - and space, truth be told, defines luxury in a world where everyone is itching to get away.

Building a Resort in Three Days

Owners Sarah and Paul began traveling in a vintage 1975 Airstream trailer after spending a year renovating it to its original condition. They spent a year traveling. “Everywhere we went, we feel in love with the time with our family and our daughter,” says Sarah. “It was everything we needed and nothing we didn’t. No distractions. Pure family time, and we adored it. “

They realized that most camping grounds resembled parking lots. And they thought, that if they were craving space, other Airstreamers were, too. Ideas began swirling. What if its Airstream only? What if its vintage only? That was a Wednesday; on Saturday, they began looking for land. And by that weekend, the site was designed based on the natural landscape. Two years later, the vision was completed almost to-a-T of the original concept.

“Our dream was to give Airstreamers what we believed they wanted,” says Sarah. When you’re traveling through Texas, people want to see how Texas people live. They wanted space but also a place for guests to come together as community. “No one comes here by accident,” she continues. “The friendships I have seen are out of control.”

Special events are held at the barn, and one of the most symbolic is for the women. Sarah explains the arduous process of working night after night, filling out applications, searching for backing, and trying hard not to give up. “I thought of a woman that needed The Range,” she explains on the website, “but she couldn’t build it herself. She needed me to do it for her. Every time I hear the peace you find when you’re here and how you breathe more easily the moment you drive through the entrance, I think back to my imaginary women and thank her.” Women’s Weekends celebrate women, resilience, and hope.
