From the highest point in Georgia—Brasstown Bald (Mt. Enotah) rising to an elevation of 4,784 feet—and descending 2,500 feet to the valley below, the mountains of Georgia beckon. The heights offer heart-stopping views of mountain ranges while the valleys present small towns where two-lane roads lead to local riches. Sitting within the shadow of Georgia’s highest peak is Brasstown Valley Resort and Spa. Modern amenities draw thousands each year for relaxation as the valley’s history deepens each experience.
According to legend, a great flood swept through the land, and everyone died except a few families who landed atop Brasstown Bald in a giant canoe—or riding on a turtle’s back according to some. The Great Spirit killed all the trees so families could plant crops and survive until the floods subsided. Today, its grassy summit provides a 360-degree unobstructed view of the Southern states. On a clear day, the metropolis of Atlanta, some 85 miles in the distance, can be seen. Access the summit with a short hike or shuttle service from the visitor’s center.
A visit to the highest point in Georgia provides an introduction to the area’s Cherokee history. It’s a must-see on your way to Young Harris where you’ll find Brasstown Valley Resort and Spa.
